Chiller Tuesday Movie Review; Edge of the Axe
Welcome back to another Chiller Tuesday blog post courtesy of Kris the Horror Queen over at the Gizmos Corner podcast...
Next up of movies I recommend you watch on VHS if you can hunt a copy down, -
“Edge of the Axe” (1989).
Directed by José Ramón Larraz and set in Northern California, Edge of the Axe starts (post opening scene) following two friends, Gerald and Richard, as they discover the first body of a string of murders the plays out over the course of the next 91 minutes. Gerald meets love interest Lillian, who confides in him her cousin Charlie was “ recently released” from a mental hospital as she suspects he may be responsible for the killings. As the bodies pile up, Gerald and Lillian venture on to try to solve the mystery behind the killer. Or…….at least that’s how it seems to be set up. As we reach the third act, Gerald discovers some new “information” that may point a new finger in this “who-dun-it” style slasher. As the finale crests, we’re left with a twist we may or may not have seen coming. Shot in Madrid, this movie sets itself up in one way, but we end up with something a bit different. We start with a promising opening kill, and a simple but effective mask for the killer. The acting between main characters is quite dull, along with not too much variation in each kill scene. If you’re a fan of super cheesy 80s slashers like I am, this film should be right up your alley! The soundtrack and film style give it a serene feeling amongst the scenes of awkward love and murder. This one falls into the category of very low tier 80s slashers, but also reeks of some sort of charm!
